A US college is facing a similar fate as the original academy because the New College in Florida is being taken over by the autocratic governor Ron DeSantis who is attempting to bring the academics to heel just like the Spartans. DeSantis was also instrumental for banning books and direct involvement in the Bush torture program in both Afghanistan and Iraq. DeSantis is unfortunately the leading Republican candidate for president based on polling. The fragility of institutions of learning like the Academy needs to be recognized and protected if they are to endure. The more things change; the more they stay the same.
PS: I am very glad Mr. Robertson named his center "Plato's Academy." There was an adult club in New York named Plato's Retreat that was quite infamous.
