During his reign as emperor, in the year 165 AD, a devastating epidemic known as the Antonine Plague swept through the Roman Empire. There are some accounts that suggest that the death ratio reached up to five million across the empire. Just as our modern day Covid-19 pandemic caused societal disruptions, this ancient tumultuous shroud over Rome led to economic uncertainty, political instability, and social unrest. Marcus was a student of Stoic philosophy, and thus was able to maintain his equanimity by focusing on what he could control vs. what he couldn’t. He persevered, leading a nation as well as his thirteen legions by drawing upon his cultivated wisdom, courage, and ultimately, his inner resilience. -
