Ovid made interesting contributions about lovesickness per se, but Ovid was not doing psychoanalysis and talking as a remedy for suffering was nothing new among ancient healers. The knife, the herb and “the word” were long established healing tools. Talk therapies of all stripes both preceded and followed after Freuds work. Freud developed a unique methodology (free association for the patient and ‘free floating attention’ for the analyst), a unique theory (the proposition of unconscious motivation and unconscious desires as factors in symptom formation) and a unique form of intervention (interpretations aimed at making conscious the formerly unconscious contents of the mind (‘where ID was EGO shall be’).
